LocHire Stenhousemuir suffered a two-wicket defeat last Saturday as they narrowly lost out to newly-promoted Drumpellier at the Tryst in Western Premiership One.

On a perfect day for cricket, Stenhousemuir won the toss and chose to bat.

They went on to lose both openers early but Zander Smith (39) and professional Danie Rossouw secured a 84 run partnership before being put out within five runs of each other.

Asad Izaz (34) and Callum Grant (33) added 60. Stenhousemuir managed 230 for seven wickets off their 50 overs. Five batters got a good start but each failed to turn that into consequential scores.

In reply, visitors Drumpellier scored 232/8 and whilst wickets fell regularly, no one could shift the Drumpellier professional Jayathilake who scored 95 not out.

With five runs required off the last two balls, Jayathilake struck a long hop for six to win the match with one ball to spare.

On Sunday, Stenhousemuir’s second XI travelled to Newton Mearns to take on Mearns’ second string. The game turned out to be a tightly fought match with Stenny losing by two wickets.

Mearns won the toss and asked Stenhousemuir to bat and on a fair wicket, only one player managed to get double figures, with Farhan Haider scoring 15 out of Stenhousemuir’s total of 62 all out.

The Stenhousemuir bowlers battled hard and had Mearns 51 for eight but were unable to control Bhattcharya who smashed 11 off five balls to take the score to 63 for eight.
