Jacob Murrell joins Falkirk from MLS as John McGlynn outlines what forward will bring to Bairns.
John McGlynn says new Falkirk signing Jacob Murrell will bring “something different” to the Bairns’ current crop after securing the American forward on a two-year deal.
That contract also includes the club-held option of a third year for the former DC United striker. The 22-year-old brings top-flight experience from the States, having played 51 times across the previous two campaigns. He was drafted by DC United in the 2024 MLS Superdraft, where he was the seventh overall pick.
“We’re delighted to get Jacob in,” Falkirk boss McGlynn said. “He’s a player we’ve been aware of for a wee while and one that we feel can bring something different to the group.
“He’s a big, strong boy, he’s 6’2”, but he’s also very mobile. He likes to get in behind and he’s got a real eye for goal. He’s still only 22, so we think there’s a lot more to come from him as well.
“He’s been playing at a good level with DC United in the MLS, so he’s coming in having had experience in a very competitive league. We’ve done a lot of work on him, watched a lot of footage and spoken to people about him, and everything we’ve heard in terms of his character has been really positive.
“We’re always looking to add players who will fit the way we want to play and who can come in and improve the squad. We believe Jacob can do that, so we’re really pleased to get it over the line and we’re looking forward to working with him.”
Murrell earned his MLS move after a breakthrough first senior season with Annapolis Blues. The Maryland-born forward scored ten goals in ten outings. Last March, he scored a sensational last-gasp bicycle kick against Chicago Fire to earn his ex-team a 2-2 draw.
"Jacob is a local talent who came to us as a first-round draft pick and grew into a professional over three seasons with this club," said DC United’s managing director of soccer operations, Dr Erkut Sogut.
"He gave this fanbase moments they will remember for a long time, and he earned everything he got here through his work.”
Murrell - who could make his debut next weekend away to Celtic in the Scottish Premiership - will wear the No 24 for Falkirk.
Meanwhile, the SPFL have confirmed that the Bairns’ postponed home fixture against Hearts will take place on Tuesday, September 15 with kick-off at 7.45pm. That match was originally set for this weekend but was called off due to the Jambos’ participation in the UEFA Conference League play-off round.
